Welcome to the official website of Hawassa University! Hawassa University (HU) is a well-established public university in Ethiopia, engaged in teaching, research, and community service for the past 50 years. 


It was founded in 1976 as Awassa Junior College of Agriculture, initially enrolling 217 students. In 2000, it transitioned into a comprehensive university by merging three colleges. Currently, HU ranks among the top universities in Ethiopia, with seven campuses, over 25,000 students, and over 9,600 staff members. The university aspires to be one of the top ten research universities in East Africa by 2030.

Major objectives of the Office

Promoting and enhancing research that focuses on knowledge and technology transfer in alignment with national priorities is one of the key mandates of public higher education institutions, as outlined in Higher Education Proclamation 1152/2019. In line with this mandate, The Office of the Vice President for Research & Collaborations is tasked with leading research projects that address the country's needs, tackle challenges, and promote overall development through technology transfer.


The specific responsibilities of the VPRC Office include:


  1. Developing and implementing the institution’s plans and policies related to research, technology transfer, university-industry linkage, and community service.
  2. Monitoring the execution of the institution’s strategies and plans for research, technology transfer, university-industry linkage, and community service.
  3. Ensuring that research thematic areas are identified and updated periodically.
  4. Making certain that research, technology transfer, university-industry linkage, and community service activities and support systems are effective.
  5. Enforcing rules and regulations pertaining to research, technology transfer, university-industry linkage, and community service.
  6. Managing financial administration, procurement, and transportation services related to research and community service efforts of the university.
  7. Creating a supportive environment for technology transfer activities and coordinating research that leads to the production of new technologies.
  8. Overseeing the delivery of relevant skills training for academic staff, students, and other employees of the institution.
  9. Fostering an organizational culture that supports research, technology transfer, university-industry linkages, and community service.
  10. Managing the overall administration of collaborative project grants or funds designated for research, technology transfer, university-industry linkage, and community service activities.
  11. Supporting and overseeing the consultancy engagements of the institution and its members with industry or other organizations.

Hawassa University has a long history of recorded success stories with regard to research endeavours since its establishment as a College of Agriculture in 1976 and its promotion to university level in 1999. HU has undertaken research projects ranging from small scale disciplinary to large-scale multidisciplinary research over the last 40 years using funds obtained from the government and international sources.
